This is Taita Taveta
Taita Taveta County encompasses a region of great scenic diversity, featuring mountain ranges, dry savannas, and major wildlife reserves such as Tsavo National Park. The economy is primarily based on agriculture, livestock farming, mining, and tourism.
At the same time, the county faces significant structural challenges. Long distances, sparsely populated areas, and, in some cases, poor road infrastructure make it difficult to access medical care, education, and emergency services. In rural areas in particular, many communities are difficult to reach.
There are also limitations in the areas of safety and emergency response. Traffic accidents on the few main roads, fires in residential areas, and emergencies in remote areas place heavy demands on emergency responders, while equipment and resources are limited.
Despite these challenges, Taita Taveta offers great potential for development, particularly through sustainable tourism, improved infrastructure, and targeted efforts to strengthen emergency and security services.
Aktuelle Lage
The largest settlement in Taita Taveta County is the town of Voi, with a population of around 50,000. Voi is thus the county’s main urban and economic hub and is strategically located on a major transportation route between the coast and the interior.
The fire station, which was newly established in 2020, is also located there and represents an important milestone in the development of structured emergency and fire protection capabilities in the region. The station is housed in a building also constructed in 2020 and currently has two large-capacity tanker trucks (Simyo Trucks) that are specifically designed for long response distances and water shortages in the region.
The fire department currently consists of 24 firefighters who work in shifts and are responsible for both firefighting and technical rescue operations throughout the Voi service area. Due to the county’s large size and the sometimes long travel distances, the workload is correspondingly high.
The expansion of the fire department system is currently in its next phase of development. Plans call for three additional stations in the so-called sub-counties to improve response times and better serve more remote areas. This will gradually establish a more comprehensive network designed to meet the region’s growing needs.
So helfen wir
As in neighboring Kilifi County, the project in Taita Taveta County also focuses on establishing a standardized and comprehensive training program for firefighters. The goal is to provide firefighters with long-term training and to establish common standards for training and operational practices.
In the winter of 2022, the two project managers, Jörg Klatt and Torsten Sattler, visited the site to work with local officials on detailed plans for the project’s next steps. In addition to technical coordination, the focus was on directly assessing local infrastructure, operational conditions, and logistical challenges in order to tailor the training content as closely as possible to the realities on the ground.
On this basis, initial training initiatives have already been implemented, representing an important step toward structured and sustainable fire department development in the county.
Additional training modules are already in the planning stages and are intended to continuously enhance the operational capabilities of the forces.
