OVERVIEW

This is Taita Taveta

Baringo County in Kenya's Rift Valley is characterized by vast landscapes, agriculture, livestock farming, and significant natural areas. The county has great potential but faces significant infrastructural and social challenges.

Many communities live in rural and sometimes remote areas. Long distances, unpaved roads, and limited access to water, electricity, and medical care make daily life difficult for many families.

Emergency services are also under significant strain: traffic accidents on highways, fires in communities, and emergencies in hard-to-reach areas require rapid assistance, yet vehicles, equipment, and training are often limited.

In addition, droughts, floods, and wildfires regularly affect people, animals, and agriculture. Despite these challenges, Baringo County has great potential for development. Investments in infrastructure, education, and firefighting can sustainably improve safety, access to essential services, and future opportunities.

THE SITUATION ON THE GROUND

CURRENT SITUATION

A column of smoke rises above the small town of Kapsogo, visible from miles away. A fire has broken out in a classroom at the local school. Teachers and students manage to escape to safety in time. It takes two hours for the fire truck from the Baringo County Fire Department to reach the scene. What sounds unimaginable was, until recently, the norm in this region of western Kenya. With the provision of two vehicles donated by German fire departments, efforts are now underway to fundamentally improve fire safety in the region.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

In an emergency, rangers were alerted via a telephone chain. They set off for the capital, Kabarnet, where the emergency vehicle is stationed at a fire station that is not in the best condition. However, it quickly became clear that effective assistance in emergencies looks quite different.
About a year ago, German firefighter Christian Hagedorn contacted the Baringo County government and offered his assistance. The government gratefully accepted his offer. As a result of this positive development, Hagedorn founded the “European Support Team,” as he quickly realized that the entire project was taking on much greater proportions than initially anticipated.

ON-SITE SUPPORT

William Kimosop, Chief Ranger of Baringo District, has been observing the lack of fire safety measures in the region for years. Out of pure interest, he has traveled to Germany several times and learned how the German firefighting system works at various fire stations. From the very beginning, Kimosop has been a valuable liaison and point of contact between the support team and the local government.

UNSERE AUFGABE

HOW WE HELP

After the TLF from Prüm in the Eifel region arrived in Kabernet in July 2024, two instructors took over training on this vehicle for 14 days in late October 2024. Basic training for additional personnel was also primarily conducted during this training phase.

An interview about another vehicle took place in November 2024 on WDR’s “Lokalzeit OWL” program (video starts at 03:51).

In June 2025, three instructors were on site to train the local personnel on the vehicle.
