Songea

In Tanzania, we are supporting the local fire department in the Songea District by providing a fire truck, training, and equipment. This rapidly growing region has only one fire station with seven firefighters and continues to rely on assistance.

OVERVIEW

This is Songea

Songea is one of five districts in the Ruvuma Region of Tanzania. The district consists of three councils: Songea Municipal (also known as Songea Urban or Songea Mjini), Songea District Council (Songea Rural), and Madaba District Council. It covers an area of 12,454 square kilometers and has a population of 377,130 (as of 2012). The city of Songea is the capital of the Ruvuma Region. It is located in southwestern Tanzania. Songea City has a population of 286,000 (2022 census). The largest ethnic group is the Ngoni, who migrated from the south in the 19th century.

THE SITUATION ON THE GROUND

CURRENT SITUATION

The “Songea-German Friendship Society” works in close cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior’s Fire and Rescue Services Department in Tanzania. In 2006, the association procured an older fire truck. This project was carried out at the time through a friendship initiative between Bavaria and Songea. Despite its age, the vehicle is still in service and provides valuable support to the citizens of Songea in the event of fires and accidents. However, due to its age, the fire department’s only vehicle could break down at any time. It is stationed at the Central Fire Station (A 19, Songea, Tanzania). Seven professional firefighters work at the fire station; they are soldiers who have received basic training in firefighting. The station is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is in a dilapidated condition.

HOW WE HELP

We, the European Fire & Rescue Support Association e.V., donated a fire truck complete with all necessary equipment, as well as new protective gear for the emergency responders, in 2022. In addition, we sent instructors to provide comprehensive training on how to use the new equipment.
