OVERVIEW

This is Nakuru

Nakuru County, located in central Kenya, is one of the country’s most important growth regions. The county’s economic significance stems from its capital, Nakuru, its agricultural sector, and its major transportation routes. At the same time, the population is growing faster than many of the county’s infrastructure systems can keep up with.

In cities, housing shortages, heavy traffic, and limited access to water, electricity, and waste disposal services create significant hardships. In rural areas, long distances, poor roads, and limited medical care make daily life difficult.

Emergency services are also under pressure: fires, traffic accidents, and emergencies in remote areas require rapid assistance, yet equipment, vehicles, and training are often inadequate.

In addition, drought, heavy rains, and wildfires are taking a toll on many communities. Despite all this, Nakuru County has great potential. Investments in infrastructure, education, and firefighting can bring about lasting improvements in safety and quality of life.

THE SITUATION ON THE GROUND

CURRENT SITUATION

Following intensive preparations and a detailed on-site needs assessment, we are focusing our efforts on strengthening the local fire department.

The Nakuru County Fire Department is set to undergo a major operational upgrade, made possible by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU was signed in early 2025, laying the official foundation for our collaboration.

Nakuru County, a region with a growing population and expanding infrastructure, faces significant challenges in the areas of firefighting and technical rescue. Existing resources are often insufficient, and emergency responders urgently need support to effectively protect the population and manage emergencies.

The partnership focuses on providing essential equipment, enhancing the professional skills of firefighters in Nakuru through specialized training, and promoting qualifications in health, safety, and environmental management to support community development. These efforts will significantly improve the county’s firefighting and rescue capabilities.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of EST Chairman Christian Hagedorn and Stephan Wawrok, Nakuru County Secretary Dr. Samuel Mwaura, and County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Public Service Jacqueline Osoro, as well as other county officials.

During their visit, the EST team conducted a site assessment of the Molo Fire Station. This assessment included an inspection of the available fire trucks and staff accommodations. Discussions also focused on strategies to effectively educate the general public on how to respond to fire emergencies through professional training, with the aim of minimizing potential damage and loss. Also present were County Attorney Hon. Caleb Nyamwange, Chief Officer for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance Ken Mugo, Director of Disaster Management Geoffrey Kioko, Fire Department Chief Patrick Kabue, Department Administrative Manager Gitonga Kinyanjui, Vincent Kimosop from ACPF, and other senior officials from the Department of Disaster Management.

UNSERE AUFGABE

HOW WE HELP

As part of this project, we will implement a comprehensive set of measures:

  • Provision of equipment: We will procure urgently needed fire trucks, protective gear, and technical equipment and deliver them to Nakuru. Some of the equipment is already available and will arrive on site shortly (2025).
  • Training and Education: In 2025, our experienced trainers will conduct intensive on-site training and professional development sessions for local emergency response teams to enhance their skills and knowledge. This will include both theoretical sessions and practical exercises. Additional trainers will be deployed to reinforce the teams and ensure comprehensive training.
  • Infrastructure development: We will also work to improve fire station infrastructure and optimize communication channels.

Our goal is to strengthen the fire department in Nakuru County in a sustainable way and thereby make a significant contribution to the safety and well-being of the people in this region. We are convinced that by joining forces and with the support of our partners, we can make a real difference.
